Pi(e) Day is tons of fun

Apple pie

What’s your favorite kind of pie? It’s 3-14 today, the perfect occasion for a celebration of both math and delicious baked treats with a flaky crust. Whether you prefer apple, berry, lemon meringue or any filling, it’s hard to find fault with a holiday that celebrates one of America’s favorite desserts.

Here’s a few little known facts about pie, courtesy of the American Pie Council, which promotes Pi(e) Day for students learning math and gastronomy enthusiasts alike.

Did you know?

  • Pie has been around since the ancient Egyptians, and reeds were used as a crust to contain the filling.
  • The first pie recipe was published by the Romans and was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie.
  • The crust of early English meat pies was called “coffyn”. Chicken legs left in the dish hung over the side of the dish and were used as handles.  Eating the crust and calling it crust started in America around the time of the Revolutionary War.
  • The first cherry pie baking credit goes to Queen Elizabeth I, an early Martha Stewart?
