Meet Faith Lauer, a licensed practical nurse at Harmony at Victory Station in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Although only 24, she has worked for three Harmony Senior Services communities, starting part-time in 2020 during COVID and continuing while in nursing school. She joined Harmony at Victory Station after graduating and is recognized for providing excellent care.
“Every day, I’m inspired by our residents,” said Lauer. “They’re the reason I’m so passionate about what I do.”
A family tradition ignites a career passion
Lauer’s mother worked in senior living and still does. “From a young age, she would bring me to work with her,” Lauer said. “That early exposure sparked a passion in me to care for others.”
In 2020 she worked part-time at Harmony at Brentwood as a caregiver for COVID-positive residents in memory care. While in college, she worked full-time at Harmony at Mt. Juliet in their memory care unit.
“Caring for individuals with dementia was often challenging, but it was also the most rewarding experience,” Lauer said. “As a caregiver in memory care, you become a vital presence in their daily lives, offering comfort and connection in a world that is becoming unfamiliar to them.”
The opportunity to learn from residents
“The memory care residents continued to surprise me every day with what I could learn — both about them and about myself,” Lauer said. “Each resident has given me a memory I will cherish forever.”
Now, as an LPN who is part of the assisted living team at Harmony at Victory Station, she finds she’s still learning from residents. “They have taught, and continue to teach me, patience, compassion and the importance of valuing the small things.”
Her past experience as a caregiver informs her work as a nurse. “I work closely with both our caregivers and management team because I truly believe that strong communication and teamwork are the foundation of exceptional care,” she said.
A typical day
Her day starts with morning rounds. Lauer administers medications and helps residents with their daily routines. Throughout the day, she monitors residents’ health and documents changes. She said she responds to needs that are big and small.
Lauer also collaborates with providers and keeps families updated.
“No two days are ever the same,” she said. “But my priority is always the same: making sure our residents feel safe, comfortable and genuinely cared for.”
Advice for a senior living career
Even as an early career employee, Lauer has a rich experience to pull from as she advises others considering this career path. She’s worked as a caregiver and an LPN, and she spent most of her life observing her mother’s work.
“For anyone considering a career in senior living, my advice is to be adaptable, lead with compassion and empathy — and always listen,” Lauer said. “You’ll learn so much, not only about others, but about yourself.”
