Ebook: Meet the 2025 Changemakers of Senior Living

The 2025 Changemakers series, sponsored by Yardi for the seventh consecutive year, shared inspiring stories from senior living visionaries. A newly released ebook offers bonus content you don’t want to miss, including never-before-seen excerpts from each honoree’s interview with Senior Housing News (SHN).

“Look outside senior living for inspiration.”

Amy Silva-Magalhaes, chief operating officer of The Bristal Assisted Living, pays attention to innovators who change other industries. “I always find inspiration from disruptive brands in other industries.”

She also advises that it’s important for senior living providers to hear everyone associated with their communities.

“Start by listening, not just to residents but also to employees, families and industry peers,” she said. “Collect feedback and identify areas of opportunity before you chart a path forward.”

“Investing in change takes courage and patience, but the real key is building strong teams who are bought into the mission. Be transparent about why change is happening, involve key stakeholders from the beginning, and provide ample training and support to ensure its success.”

“Do the research. Know specifically what you want to accomplish and then stick to it.”

Doug Schiffer, president and CEO of Allegro Senior Living, encourages providers to draw confidence from their research and well-defined goals so they can stay focused during a time of much-needed change.

“The process could always be faster, but I think the industry is getting better at recognizing the urgency,” he said.

He sees a resurgence in focusing on senior living operations and serving residents, “which is a wonderful thing.”

“As the industry has matured, it has moved a bit from real estate-centered growth to operations-centered growth. There is a renewed focus that while the building components are very important, the ability of the operator to make a difference in the lives of the residents is paramount.”
