The Housing Authority of the City of Fort Lauderdale (HACFL) has provided affordable housing for the community of Broward County since 1938. They are focused on building strong neighborhoods that support resident health, wellness, education and economic development. The agency serves roughly 5,000 families and continues to modernize its operations and services to meet the changing needs of the community it serves. 

The challenge

Antiquated paper processes created inefficiencies  

Staff were weighed down by paper applications and payments, while residents struggled with inaccurate submissions and limited ways to engage with the housing authority.

Due to tightened budgets, the agency faced the challenge of maintaining resident service without letting go of their valuable employees. Instead of cutting corners, leadership invested in RentCafe and reshaped their staffing model.  

RentCafe allowed them to increase staff caseloads and launch a dedicated Central Leasing department — a hub for applications, waitlists, leasing and payments. 

“RentCafe made it possible to redistribute budget dollars to this new department,” shares Marco Ferreira, Chief Operating Officer. They wouldn’t have been able to do that without the automation and simplicity RentCafe provides. 

Accurate ledgers lead to better property management  

Because residents are paying online, property managers no longer need to spend hours keying in payments. “It’s one less step, and it’s accurate,” one manager noted. With RentCafe, ledgers update in real time, improving accuracy and reducing costly errors. Managers are more in favor of online payments, knowing they’re no longer correcting payment inaccuracies or entering data manually. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.  

Stronger receivables with flexible payment options 

RentCafe also helped the agency improve rent collection. Multiple payment methods allow family members to assist residents with making payments, a feature that’s invaluable to seniors or residents with accessibility needs.  

Giving residents access around the clock helps them keep up with payments, making rent collection much timelier.
