YASC San Diego

Yardi president and founder Anant Yardi welcomed 2,500 clients to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront on Wednesday for the largest Yardi Advanced Solutions Conference (YASC) ever. “2500 is just such an incredible number. I recall when we had around 150 to 200 clients at our first YASC,” Mr. Yardi said. “We truly hope this conference is enjoyable and educational for you.” Yardi clients around the world can attend YASC events to gain product knowledge in training classes, troubleshoot issues with their current Yardi software, view product demos, network and much more. The two U.S. events take place each fall on the West Coast and spring on the East Coast. Mr. Yardi talked to the general session audience about the company’s overall road map for product development, which includes the newly released Yardi Elevate suite. Introduced at YASC DC in May, Elevate incorporates big data, machine learning and AI to offer predictive insights and is very popular with its beta users. “Our clients are very enamored already by Elevate. I think it’s going to do wonderful things for you,” Mr. Yardi said. While Elevate may be the wave of the future, in the present Yardi clients are continually working to gain new efficiencies for their business, whether that involves collecting rents, paying vendors, or marketing their properties. A video featuring 22-year Yardi client Marquette Management of Chicago and its use of the RentCafe Reach marketing platform was shown during the session and prompted Mr. Yardi to reflect on how far the company has come. When Marquette came on board in 1996, they purchased Yardi’s first generation Enterprise platform. “I was the principal programmer on Enterprise. Isn’t that something how time has gone by,” Mr. Yardi said. Today, most Yardi clients across all real estate verticals...

YASC 2018

Washington, D.C. (May 30, 2018) – Kicking off Yardi’s Advanced Solutions Conference (YASC) at the Washington Hilton, Yardi president and founder Anant Yardi shared his perspective on change. “For me, change is incremental. It’s not disruptive. Change is something we have to count on. If you are successful in making small steps over the course of time, you will be successful,” Mr. Yardi stated before more than 2,000 Yardi clients and employees gathered for the East Coast education and networking event. A West Coast YASC will be held in San Diego in September. In a 45-minute talk reflecting on the company’s development history and looking toward the future, the focus was on new lines of product development that Yardi has underway to help its clients meet their real estate and investment goals. The technology company’s goal is to help clients increase revenues and asset values while reducing costs and risk. Energy solutions, coworking management, and a full asset management suite were presented as ways to help achieve those goals. Mr. Yardi offered attendees a sneak preview of the Yardi Elevate Suite, an operational performance solution that includes in-depth operations data, deal management, market insight, predictive insights, budgeting, business intelligence and revenue forecasting. The product builds on the proven Deal Manager solution and will incorporate additional new tools, including Forecast Manager, Construction Manager, Retail Manager and Facility Manager. Another area of focus was Yardi’s growing commitment to coworking, including the leasing of vacant space for shared and temporary workers. The company has made two recent acquisitions in the area, including Wun Systems and most recently Phoenix Broadband, a Scottish company that created a platform for managing technology resources in a shared workspace. “It seems to us that this is a new category of asset type....

Sustainable Training

Do you find that your internal staff training program lacks engagement or consistency? Yardi eLearning’s featured topic for this month focuses on creating effective and sustainable training programs for busy real estate companies. Take the pressure off of your training team with these best practices. The Balance Sheet caught up with Michael Joiner of Yardi eLearning’s client services team to get the inside scoop on what this valuable training platform has to offer. What does it mean to have an Effective and Sustainable Training Program?  Joiner: An effective training program is one that meets the training needs of a company. A sustainable training program requires a balance between the administrative tasks—like scheduling training, assigning courses, communicating between instructors and students, validating student work, running reports—and maintaining existing training with the development of new training that meets additional needs of the company and its employees.  What’s one common hurdle that keeps clients’ training programs from being effective?  Joiner: Not identifying the needs of the learners. For instance, you can assign a ton a courses, but do those courses help bridge a skills gap or correct a behavior? Ineffective training programs assign courses for the sake of assigning content that someone thinks is necessary, but it may not be relevant or applicable to an individual. What’s one common hurdle that keeps clients’ training programs from being sustainable? Joiner: Focusing too much on developing new training and letting existing training become out dated. Out-of-date training leads to a lack of engagement and trust on the part of the learner. A sustainable training program creates new training initiatives while regularly updating existing content. How can users access this information after the webinar? Joiner: We’re teaching this class at YASC Washington, D.C. May 30- June 1, 2018. We’ll also be...

Connections at YASC

The next Yardi Advanced Solutions Conference is coming to Washington, D.C., kicking off on May 30, 2018. YASC brings together more than 1,500 professionals from nearly every property and financial management industry for instruction, comradery, and insight into the future of technology. At last year’s YASC, we sat down with Rachel Brown, Section 8 manager for the Fort Smith, Arkansas Housing Authority (FSHA). Rachel has witnessed exciting growth during her nearly 15 years with FSHA, growth that includes personal experiences, organizational development, as well as the growth of clients she serves. Here’s a recap of our conversation last spring. Welcome to YASC! Tell us a little about yourself and your organization. Our mission is to develop, rehabilitate and manage decent, safe and sanitary affordable housing. We promote equal opportunity, fair housing initiatives and the deconcentration of race and poverty. I’ve been with FSHA for nearly 15 years, and we’ve really grown over that time. When I first started as a housing specialist, we had around 450 Public Housing units and less than 1,200 vouchers. Today, we have more than 1,600 vouchers under our management, transitioned 288 public housing units through the RAD program, and replaced 170 public housing units with the help of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.  Our current development efforts include Low-Income Housing Tax Credit units, rehabbing dilapidated housing for sale to low- and moderate-income families, and exploring ways to provide everyone with the affordable housing that meets their needs. What do you find most rewarding about your career thus far? Seeing people’s lives transition and change for the better, those are the real ‘wow’ moments. Clients come into our program in many personal situations. Some are single parents, others are going to school or raising a family. It’s inspiring when they enter our...

YASC DC 2017

The 2017 Spring Yardi Advanced Solutions Conference (YASC) in Washington, D.C. kicked off with a glimpse into the future of relationships and technology. Yardi CEO and founder Anant Yardi addressed the crowd of nearly 1,500 clients on how cloud services, mobile apps, and artificial intelligence can be used to improve relationships. Mr. Yardi explained how Yardi will use technology to improve client relationships. He announced the creation of a task force that will address user concerns based on app ratings. “We need an organization—and we’ll set that up—where anytime we get a rating, we need someone looking at it and contacting that user. If there is a response-time issue, a particular problem, we can help them as the problem occurs. Know that service is important to us,” continues Mr. Yardi. “If it’s not good enough, we take action.” In the spirit of improvement, Yardi will continue to enhance cloud services and securities for its users. Recent cloud architecture investments included, but were not limited to, Next Gen firewalls, intrusion protection appliances and software, DDoS protection, web application firewalls, and end point protection. Ongoing training ensures that security staff stays up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field. “We now have a SWAT team within our cloud and they’re constantly monitoring for changes,” chuckles Mr. Yardi. “We are sending members of our security teams to all of the security conferences so that we can be sure that we’re doing the right thing by you.” Staying abreast of trends is another way that Yardi plans to improve relationships through technology.  The refinement of artificial intelligence paves the way for a vast array of applications, not the least of which includes property management. Mr. Yardi posed conceptual applications that use machine learning to improve clients’ bottom line. Unlike...

Energized for Tomorrow May17

Energized for Tomorrow

Yardi has been creating real estate software for more than three decades. The company was founded by Anant Yardi in Santa Barbara in 1984, and over the years Yardi has become a respected industry leader and pioneer, providing technology solutions for almost every conceivable real estate vertical. After more than 30 years in the business, you might expect us to be setting the metaphorical cruise control while we enjoy the ride. Time to think again. As we focus on 2017 and beyond, Yardi is proud to unveil a new theme and direction. We are Energized for Tomorrow. Capturing our spirit Energy powers our bodies, our homes and our businesses. It is part of natural processes, people, machinery and technology. Energy is also an invaluable description of spirit. When we say “energized,” you might hear “focused, excited, driven, motivated, ready, enthusiastic, prepared.” But that’s just the beginning. Energy is contagious. It spreads quickly and can power exciting results and success. For us, it all starts in the workplace. We hope to continue perpetuating the positive, supportive, family-focused energy that is part of our longstanding corporate culture beyond our offices. Serving our clients Our clients tell us that they enjoy coming to our Yardi Advanced Solutions Conferences (YASC), as well as the vertical-focused Yardi Forums, because of the spirit of community at Yardi. As we continue to grow globally, we will find new ways to share that energy. Our energy for creative development and progress is frequently powered by our valued clients. We thrive when we listen to their challenges, strategies, struggles and successes. We are energized by creating products that help our clients run their businesses better. Energy is also a very practical consideration for every business owner. No matter what your segment of the real estate industry, providing efficient and affordable utility services and billing is a consideration. Energized for good Finally, we want to use our energy to give back. As part of our philanthropic efforts, we are working to promote the cause of energy efficiency on a national level. We have provided education grants to BOMA, IREM, NAA and BOMI International to move this important work forward. The goal is to help reduce energy use in commercial, residential and mixed-use properties through education and technology. We look forward to sharing more about how we are energized for good in the months to come. This year and into the future, we want to stay Energized for Tomorrow. Thank you for joining us on the...

Senior Living Forum Mar27

Senior Living Forum

On March 29-30, Yardi hosted the second Yardi Senior Living Forum, focused specifically on the needs of our senior living clients,  in Santa Barbara, Calif. The two-day featured speakers, classes, roundtable discussions, computer lab time and more. In advance of that event, Ray Elliot, vice president of senior living, joined us to share insight on the Yardi Senior Living Suite. An end-to-end solution that tracks senior living residents throughout their housing journey, the suite includes Yardi EHR for health care records, numerous offerings from Yardi’s ancillary product line, and continues to expand. Senior living is a rapidly growing segment of the multifamily housing market, and Yardi is developing new and improved technology offerings that cater specifically to this client base. Read on for insight on the Yardi Senior Living Suite. What is your mission on the senior living team? Elliot: Our mission is to help senior living providers provide better care to their residents through software and technology. We aim to streamline both the property management and care services on a platform that is efficient, mobile and adaptable. What does the Yardi Senior Living Suite look like? Elliot: Our greatest strength s our single solution stack. I do not believe any other vendor can take you from the initial contact that starts the resident relationship, all the way through the resident lifecycle. RENTCafe Senior Living can be used to market the communities. Prospect and mass marketing is done in CRM. From there, our clients manage their communities, health care records, medical care and other resident services from a single database. RentCafe Senior Living augments the resident relationship by allowing the resident and family to make payments online and view care related information. Added together, this level of functionality is unique in the market space. Many other technology providers address just one segment of...

Senior Living Forum

Whether you are a director, care provider or sales and marketing professional, you won’t want to miss the Yardi Senior Living Forum. With an eye towards expanding training and networking opportunities for Yardi clients, Yardi launched the Yardi Senior Living Forum in 2016. After the resounding success of the inaugural event, a second Yardi Senior Living Forum has been scheduled March 29-30 in Santa Barbara, Ca. The smaller event offers a more focused presentation of Yardi products designed to meet the specialized needs of clients working in the senior living industry. Participants will get the opportunity to gain deeper insight into the Yardi Senior Living Suite, including Voyager Senior Housing, Yardi EHR, Senior CRM and RentCafe Senior Living. “Support is a focus for us,” Ray Elliott, Vice President of Senior Living, explained when the 2016 Senior Living Forum debuted. “That includes how we help the client to implement the product, and ongoing support afterward “We recognize that the senior living industry has unique training staffing needs.” A YASC Alternative Set against the backdrop of sunny Santa Barbara, the “American Riviera,” the primary goal of the Yardi Senior Living Forum is to create a one-of-kind educational and networking experience. While YASC will continue to be a valuable resource for Senior Living clients to attend classes on general functionality and ancillary modules, the conference now includes only a limited amount of Senior Living specific content. For expanded, detailed coverage of the products in the Senior Living Suite, the Forum is the best option. The forum will provide in-depth instruction by Yardi Senior Living technical staff, along with product roundtables and product roadmap sessions. The Forum will benefit operational staff, including executive directors and administrators, clinical directors and healthcare professionals, sales and marketing staff, and business managers. A full conference registration includes...

Airbnb + Apartments Oct07

Airbnb + Apartments

Airbnb announced the official launch of its multifamily housing program. The Friendly Buildings Program welcomes collaboration with apartment owners and addresses their apprehensions regarding transparency and accountability—that is what it attempts to do, at least. Nearly 35 percent of multifamily property owners are interested in a home-sharing program and 24 percent of owners were unsure, reports the new National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) home-sharing survey. Nearly 60 percent of multifamily property owners are open to the idea of Airbnb onsite. The market is a powerful growth opportunity for the company if it can overcome owners’ concerns. In the past, apartment owners routinely resisted the use of their properties for short-term rentals. The legalities of renter subleasing and inadequate insurance provisions topped the list of objections. Security and accountability trailed close behind. The Friendly Buildings Program proposes the following solutions: The program brings property owners into the loop of transactions. Owners can establish parameters for unit-sharing, including restrictions. Short-term rental provisions are made easy through lease addendums. Owners are notified of home sharing activity including reservation details and guest information. Owners receive regularly scheduled activity reports. The program protects against liability claims up to $1 million USD that occur in a listing as well as up to $1 million against third party claims of property damage or bodily injury. Kim Duty, Senior VP, Public Affairs & Industry Initiatives at NMHC summarized many owners’ thoughts on the insurance proposal, “A $1 million insurance policy is not close to enough to cover the potential risks.” Until more can be done to reduce liability, Airbnb faces a formidable obstacle. Most owners won’t move forward without a feasible insurance solution. Mark Stringer, executive Vice President at Avenue5 Residential took a quick survey of the room. More than 75 percent of...
