If residents are smokers, they might resent being told that they c<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/08\/Fotolia_52651581_Subscription_XXL-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"woman with smoking restriction sign\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" \/>annot smoke in their own homes. However, there are many benefits to banning smoking in a community.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the health concerns\u2014second-hand smoke can infiltrate other apartments\u2014smoking increases the risk of fires. Additionally, property managers who put a non-smoking clause in the lease could often see a greater ROI on their units when they turn them over. When a resident smokes in the unit, the property manager must pay to get the smoke smell out, as well as pay to repaint walls discolored by smoke and to fix any damages caused by cigarette burns.<\/p>\n<p>Related Companies recently decided that <a title=\"Related Companies apartment smoking ban\" href=\"http:\/\/www.multihousingnews.com\/news\/related-companies-national-portfolio-goes-smoke-free\/1004083846.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not allowing smoking<\/a> in their communities would greatly benefit both them and their residents.\u00a0 The real estate company announced that its national portfolio would be completely smoke free. For those residents who are smokers, once it\u2019s time for their lease to be renewed, they must sign an amended copy signifying that they know they cannot smoke in their units.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, a smoke-free initiative at a community might be hard to enforce, especially if a smoker isn\u2019t caught in the act.
