Interestingly, most older adults recognize that they\u2019ll need some form of assistance in the future \u2014 but less have concrete plans for how to get there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the focus of a recent study conducted by AARP, which surveyed 1,011 U.S. adults aged 50 and older. See below for a snapshot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senior living study: Preparing for aging &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the study \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/research\/topics\/care\/info-2022\/long-term-care-planning-readiness.html\">Long-Term Care Readiness<\/a> \u2014 <strong>68%<\/strong> of older adults believe they\u2019ll need assistance with their daily activities in the future, but only <strong>28%<\/strong> have thoroughly considered what life will look like when that assistance is needed. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, older adults may not be preparing for their aging journey as much as they could be. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcknightsseniorliving.com\/home\/news\/most-older-adults-believe-they-will-need-adl-assistance-but-few-plan-for-it-aarp\/?email_hash=a760a8c8a2481ffe781c15aacbb83d61&amp;hmEmail&amp;hmSubId&amp;mpweb=1326-28552-775320\">Relayed by McKnight\u2019s Senior Living<\/a>, the AARP study also revealed the following: &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>74% of those aged 65 and older believe they\u2019ll need future assistance, compared to 64% of respondents aged 50 to 65<\/li><li>Those aged 65 and older gave more thought to how they\u2019ll live independently as they age, compared to respondents aged 50 to 65<\/li><li>Not being able to live independently (63%) and becoming a burden to family members (62%) were the top two concerns noted by all respondents<\/li><li>Fewer respondents were concerned about savings (59%), living in assisted living or nursing homes (58%) or not being able to age at home<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>AARP sought to understand the effect of COVID-19 too, assessing whether older adults plan for the future more than they did two years ago. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/research\/topics\/care\/info-2022\/long-term-care-planning-readiness.html\">Read the study<\/a> to learn what respondents said, and uncover additional findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first survey that reveals how older adults are prepping to age. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcknightsseniorliving.com\/home\/news\/older-adults-failure-to-plan-is-an-opportunity-for-senior-living-operators\/\">recent poll<\/a> courtesy of the University of Michigan, <strong>88%<\/strong> of respondents aged 50 to 80 said it was important to age in place as long as possible, but only <strong>15%<\/strong> said they had given much thought to modifying their homes as they age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An opportunity for industry providers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There may be different reasons why older adults aren\u2019t preparing for the future, but according to further analysis from each study, a strong one may be a lack of knowledge about aging options and affordability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For providers, that presents an opportunity to educate prospective residents who may not know about the options available to them \u2014 and offer insight as to what makes their community a differentiator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But connecting with future residents and forming positive relationships is no easy task.
