\"Cloud<\/a>If you think you aren\u2019t utilizing a cloud computing solution, think again. There are clouds everywhere. In fact, they are so ubiquitous that we may not realize we are using them nearly constantly as we navigate our professional and personal lives.<\/p>\n

Just like A.A. Milne\u2019s Eeyore with his little gray cloud always following him around over his head, the cloud that houses our digital data is ever-present today, even if you haven\u2019t set up your own personal cloud or have yet to transfer your business data to a cloud-based solution.<\/p>\n

But it turns out that plenty of people still don\u2019t understand what cloud computing is all about, and may not want to admit it. If this is you, read on. Here\u2019s what you don\u2019t know about the cloud.<\/p>\n

1. Despite the fact that we just used that really cute Winnie the Pooh analogy, cloud computing has nothing to do with clouds in the sky at all. It\u2019s a term referring to software and data that\u2019s hosted on a remote server network, \u00a0and accessible by you or your employees without requiring a direct wired connection to that information.\u00a0 Where did the term cloud come from? “IT professionals have used a cloud icon while drafting network diagrams forever to symbolize the Internet,” explains James Beane, Manager of Cloud Services for Yardi Systems.\u00a0 “Eventually organizations starting taking data out of the local environment and putting it into ‘The Cloud.'”<\/p>\n

2. If you use web-based email, social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or YouTube, photo sites like Flickr, Tumblr or Instagram, software hosting services, or just about any computer service that utilizes the Internet in some way, you are uploading data onto clouds all day long \u2013 you just don\u2019t think about it. Where do you think Facebook keeps all those photos you share with your friends? They\u2019re \u00a0stored on Facebook\u2019s servers and you\u2019re accessing them via cloud computing.<\/p>\n

3. Cloud space is something you can rent \u2013 maybe even get for free with services like Apple\u2019s iCloud \u2013 and it creates a secure back-up for your home or office data. Imagine that your office is damaged in a fire or other emergency disaster.\u00a0 If you controlled your own servers and kept them on site, all of your crucial business information might be lost. But if you utilize a cloud-based solution, which should be fully secure, redundant and constantly updated, only your on-site technology would be lost. You could be serving clients again in no time. Be wary of free cloud space, though. It always comes with a catch, possibly one you won\u2019t be aware of. \u00a0For instance, Facebook\u2019s terms allow them to use your photo archives however they want in the future. Don\u2019t like that idea? Frequently check and update your privacy settings.\u00a0 Paid cloud services on the other hand offer clear terms and conditions.<\/p>\n

\"Server<\/a>4. It\u2019s not invisible \u2013 or sky-based. Where is the cloud?
