The framework for learning starts before a student ever sits down at a desk. Stability in the family, a safe home and nutritious meals are the building blocks for learning. In Irving, Texas children battle the odds and graduate without all of the blocks. Irving Schools Foundation is helping them to succeed.<\/p>\n

Speaking for children who can\u2019t speak up for themselves<\/strong><\/p>\n

Crystal Scanio, the president and CEO of Irving Schools Foundation, has wanted to be a child advocate since she was a kid. Scanio grew up in Indonesia as an expat. She recalls neighborhoods of<\/p>\n

children who did not attend school because they could not afford uniforms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI vividly remember driving through the village in our nice comfy school bus on our way to learn,\u201d she reflects. \u201cWe\u2019d see all the children sitting outside of their modest houses looking at us with such envy in their eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven as a small child, I knew that this was not fair and education should be something that everyone has access to if they have the desire to learn,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

She later witnessed a woman holding her baby whose arms and legs were severely mangled. \u201cMy teacher told me that the mother did that to the baby because she knew that she could garner more money for her children from people driving by if she was standing on the side of the road with a baby that had broken limbs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scanio\u2019s heart sank. \u201cFrom that moment I knew that I wanted to serve in a capacity where I could be an advocate for children that couldn\u2019t speak up for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

After graduating college, Scanio intended to move to a developing nation and help children there. As she learned that American children also faced dire situations, she\u2019d opted to stay Stateside. A circuitous path led her to Irving Schools Foundation where she has advocated for children since 2012.<\/p>\n

Bridging the gap<\/strong><\/p>\n

In most school districts, there is a broad gap between what the District provide from tax dollars and what schools need. Many Districts have formed foundations to bridge that gap.<\/p>\n

The Irving Schools Foundation is one of the oldest in the US. It was established in 1985 when the demographics were quite different: back then, only 12% of students required free or reduced lunch. Today, it\u2019s 100% of students.<\/p>\n

Serving a low-income, high-risk population comes with its fair share of challenges, but there are also uplifting surprises. \u201cIf you were to simply look at the demographics of our children or hear some of the stories that they share about their home lives– abuse, sex trafficking, drugs–one would assume that these kids would not excel at school,\u201d observes Scanio.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, our test scores are above state averages and our graduation rates are over 95%. It\u2019s due to the fact that these children know that education is the key for them to get out of their situation,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

When Irving Schools Foundation began, its goal was to support teachers with additional training and supplies. The mission has grew to include college scholarships, but some kids never claimed them. They needed to stay home and care for younger siblings, or work to support their families. The program expanded again to include food security, housing, social and emotional health programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe results have been incredible to watch,\u201d says Scanio. \u201cOur students have flourished and our claim rate on our scholarships is now over 90%!\u201d\"\"<\/p>\n

Adapting to changing needs during the pandemic<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pandemic has had a major impact on the students of Irving District.\u00a0 Many of them come from homes with an average income less than $25,000 per year. Many students already had jobs to help support their families, but during the pandemic others began searching for work. Still, students faced with food insecurity and homelessness on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

Many kids relied on the District for food during the week. When schools closed, these kids faced crises. Scanio explains, \u201cWe knew that each day without school meant a day without a meal for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Foundation has adjusted to best serve their new needs of students. With community assistance, the Foundation mobilized food distribution. It was a scramble to find some students, but the help of volunteers made it possible. Foundation counselors called and walked to apartment complexes, hotels and motels to find students and hand deliver bags of food.<\/p>\n

Due to local job loss and other conditions, the need for food rose from 1,300 children to 5,000 children each week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf not for the community of volunteers and donors we would have never made it. We never stopped serving and are continuing to provide over 1,500 bags a week to our students now that school is back in session. We modified our bags to make them more of a dinner meal for a family of four,\u201d says Scanio.<\/p>\n

Yardi + Irving Schools Foundation<\/strong><\/p>\n

As schools closed and then switched to virtual classrooms, economically disadvantaged school districts were hit hard. Many struggled to provide the technology and supplies needed.<\/p>\n

Yardi is a proud sponsor of Irving Schools Foundation. The grant helped the Foundation purchase computer monitors for teachers that taught virtual and in-person classes simultaneously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen our teachers learned that they would be receiving these monitors, so many of them broke into tears. They were so excited to know that they were going to receive a tool that would help them meet their students\u2019 needs,\u201d says Scanio.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

She continues, \u201cOur teachers are incredible human beings that have pledged to serve their students no matter the challenges. COVID presented a challenge that nobody was prepared for and Yardi helped our teachers meet this challenge and then some. It was the perfect gift!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Foundation\u2019s work continues<\/strong><\/p>\n

In-person school has resumed in many places throughout the U.S., but things are far from normal. Scanio and her team have lost contact with many students. Efforts to reach them continue, and those efforts have revealed new concerns for the District and the Foundation.<\/p>\n

Many parents lost their jobs in the local hospitality industry. Additionally, reports confirm that an alarming number of parents have passed away from COVID leaving their children behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe social and emotional toll that this has taken on our children will continue for years to come,\u201d says Scanio. \u201cWe are prepared as an organization to meet the need of our children so long as our community partners continue to help us financially.\u201d<\/p>\n
