{"id":17280,"date":"2017-05-04T05:00:22","date_gmt":"2017-05-04T12:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/?p=17280"},"modified":"2026-02-22T15:40:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T23:40:08","slug":"grid-sized-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/grid-sized-storage\/","title":{"rendered":"Grid-Sized Storage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Late last month, Southern California Edison switched on its newest substations, an 80MWh lithium-ion battery storage facility that will manage peak demand and improve grid reliability.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17297 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/GrantDavis.jpg\" alt=\"GrantDavis\" width=\"443\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just off Interstate 15, nestled in the heart of California\u2019s Riverside County, one of the world\u2019s biggest energy storage projects recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3161755\/sustainable-it\/the-worlds-largest-battery-storage-substation-is-now-live.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roared to life<\/a>. Part of a collaboration between Tesla and Southern California Edison (SCE), the installation at the Mira Loma substation will be used to manage peak energy demand and stabilize the grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon completion, this system will be the largest lithium-ion battery storage project in the world,\u201d declares a Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/blog\/addressing-peak-energy-demand-tesla-powerpack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> announcing the project. \u201cWhen fully charged, this system will hold enough energy to power more than 2,500 households for a day or charge 1,000 Tesla vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Managing Peak Energy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Mira Loma project is one of the first to use Tesla\u2019s new Powerpack 2 for utility-scale energy storage. With an 80 MWh capacity, the 400 Powerpacks will allow SCE to manage energy use during peak hours. The Powerpacks will be charged with electricity generated during off-peak hours and then supplement demand during periods of peak demand. This process will not only save energy; it will allow SCE to maintain grid reliability, deliver better power quality to customers and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system will charge using electricity from the grid during off-peak hours and then deliver electricity during peak hours to help maintain the reliable operation of Southern California Edison\u2019s electrical infrastructure which feeds more than 15 million residents,\u201d explains the Tesla statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy doing so, the Tesla Powerpack system will reduce the need for electricity generated by natural gas and further the advancement of a resilient and modern grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Future Expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Larger utility-scale energy storage projects are already in the works in the U.S. and abroad, including a 34 MWh installation at the Irvine Ranch Water District.
