We\u2019ve applied the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardimatrix.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yardi Matrix<\/a> national average rent of $1,220 in each one of the Forbes top 10 cities to give you an idea of your dollar\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the List<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Forbes created the list by analyzing the following data points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>median household income<\/li>\n<li>the percentage of owner-occupied households<\/li>\n<li>percent of population under 18<\/li>\n<li>average commuting delays<\/li>\n<li>violent crime rates per 100,000\u00a0inhabitants<\/li>\n<li>local school quality<\/li>\n<li>cost of childcare\u00a0by state<\/li>\n<li>cost of living<\/li>\n<li>housing affordability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Unites States Census Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Texas Transportation Institute, greatschools.org, Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness, and the National\u00a0Association\u00a0of Home Builders provide the data for Forbes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slowing Rent Growth<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yardi Matrix monthly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yardi.com\/news\/press-releases\/yardi-matrix-monthly-real-estate-market-report-u-s-rent-growth-strong-in-august\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> analyses data from 119 markets to determine the national average rent.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the eighth month that rents have continued to climb to all-time highs, though it seems as though they may be losing momentum. Overall rent growth is slowing down. A decline in job growth and occupancy may keep the average rent from skyrocketing higher. Ultimately, that may mean that your dollar stretches farther in coming months.<\/p>\n<p>But this is where we are at now:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Provo, UT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Provo (pictured) is considered Forbes best place to live while you\u2019re raising a family. This city records low crime rates, stellar school quality, and light traffic. Residents here, who tend to be younger adults, enjoy also relish homeownership en masse.<\/p>\n<p>For renters, $1,160 will open the doors to a pet-friendly townhouse with 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom spread across 900 square feet. While it\u2019s cozy, it also comes with plenty of character. Hardwood floors, classic arches in the walkways, and a large eat-in kitchen make it easy to envision raising a family there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ogden, UT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not far away, Ogden offers similar qualities in terms of a minimal commute and low crime rates. The school system doesn\u2019t perform as well as Provo but the family dollar buys more square footage: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colonialcourt-ogden.com\/?_yTrackUser=MTI2MDcwNTUwIzUxNjIwMDMyOQ%3d%3d-aIOWQpDMEOA%3d&amp;_yTrackVisit=null\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> you can find a rent of $1,160 per month with 1,270 square feet divided into 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oxnard, CA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looking for the best of both worlds? Residents of Oxnard encounter light traffic, low crime rates, good schools and a beautiful climate. Housing is more expensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments\/ca\/oxnard\/1920-n-h-251\/index.aspx?_yTrackUser=MTI2MDcwNTUwIzUxNjIwMDMyOQ%3d%3d-aIOWQpDMEOA%3d&amp;_yTrackVisit=MjIwMjM3NjkyIzIwMjY5OTM2MzU%3d-clJPHZldNp0%3d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>: $1,200 will get you 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom nudged into 622 square feet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allentown, PA<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-27-at-3.32.42-PM.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16398\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16398\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-27-at-3.32.42-PM.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-3-32-42-pm\" width=\"348\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allentown is a hidden gem. It\u2019s a quaint town with low crime and high home ownership rates among its residents. There is room for improvement in the schools when compared to Provo, though, but there is certainly a silver lining. A 1,218-square-foot <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libertyparkallentown.com\/?_yTrackUser=MTI2MDcwNTUwIzUxNjIwMDMyOQ==-aIOWQpDMEOA=&amp;_yTrackVisit=MjIwMjM3NjkyIzIwMjY5OTM2MzU=-clJPHZldNp0=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apartment<\/a> (pictured, right) costs only $1,285 and offers 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. \u00a0That\u2019s plenty of room for the family!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Richmond, VA <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Richmond represents the finest in the southeast in terms of short commutes and public safety, yet the cost of living may be a challenge for some families. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enginecompanylofts.net\/?_yTrackUser=MTI2MDcwNTUwIzUxNjIwMDMyOQ==-aIOWQpDMEOA=&amp;_yTrackVisit=MjIwMjM3NjkyIzIwMjY5OTM2MzU=-clJPHZldNp0=\">Here<\/a> a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment at 652 square feet will set you back about $1,100.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honolulu, HI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Forbes praised Honolulu for its median income and great school system but you can\u2019t pretend that the temperate, year-round climate isn\u2019t a selling point. The high cost of living leads to less home ownership, which also affects renters: $1,195 only buys a 290-square-foot <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halekahakaiapts.com\/?_yTrackUser=MTI2MDcwNTUwIzUxNjIwMDMyOQ==-aIOWQpDMEOA=&amp;_yTrackVisit=MjIwMjM3NjkyIzIwMjY5OTM2MzU=-clJPHZldNp0=\">studio<\/a> apartment with a private bathroom. With so little space indoors for the family, it\u2019s great that the weather allows you to enjoy the outdoors all year long.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harrisburg, PA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another Keystone State city makes the list due to high rates of home ownership and minimal traffic. Those key factors come at a price. A 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldcityhallbc.com\/?_yTrackUser=MTI2MDcwNTUwIzUxNjIwMDMyOQ==-aIOWQpDMEOA=&amp;_yTrackVisit=MjIwMjM3NjkyIzIwMjY5OTM2MzU=-clJPHZldNp0=\">apartment<\/a> across 500-700 square feet comes with a $1,260 price tag.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bridgeport, CT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though the schools of Bridgeport have room for improvement, a favorable median income range, high rates of home ownership, and an overall high quality of living makes it a desirable city. An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citytrustapartments.com\">apartment<\/a> for $1,175 offers 1bedroom, 1 bathroom and up to 751 square feet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>San Jose, CA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Residents of San Jose can<strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16377 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/09\/Hartford-Coltsville-Apt-1024x741.jpg\" alt=\"hartford-coltsville-apt\" width=\"348\" height=\"252\" \/><\/strong> take advantage of some of the best schools on the list, as well as median incomes that contribute to a fine quality of life. Traffic congestion makes it difficult to get around. Apartments near your place of employment can cut out the headache. A rental here costs about $2.85 per square foot with an average rent of $2,532.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hartford, CT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Home ownership is a popular option in Hartford and it suites the residents\u2019 their median income.
