According to the 2015 edition of the <a title=\"Copenhagenize Design Company Index\" href=\"http:\/\/copenhagenize.eu\/index\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copenhagenize Design Company Index<\/a> of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, Minneapolis and Montr\u00e9al are the only two North American cities that placed into the Top 20 bike friendliest cities in the world. Buenos Aires also made it to the top 20 to represent South America, while the remaining 17 spots were snagged by European cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bordeaux, Paris and Vienna.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond the bikelane<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Copenhagenize put together a list 122 global cities with metro populations of over 600,000 (or significant political and regional importance) that are putting serious effort into reestablishing biking as a feasible, accepted and practical form of transport. As such, selected cities are given scores from 0 to 4 in <a title=\"Bike score categories\" href=\"http:\/\/copenhagenize.eu\/index\/criteria.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13 categories<\/a>, considered essential for a truly bike-friendly city:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>advocacy for biking,<\/li>\n<li>pervasiveness of facilities (bike racks, stair ramps, space allotment on public transport, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>bicycle culture within a city or its relegation to subcultures<\/li>\n<li>cycling infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>perception of safety by cyclists<\/li>\n<li>political involvement<\/li>\n<li>social acceptance from drivers and the community at large<\/li>\n<li>traffic calming (special biking zones, lower speed limits, priority for pedestrians and cyclists over cars)<\/li>\n<li>gender split<\/li>\n<li>modal share of residents using bikes as a mode of transportation instead of cars or mass transit<\/li>\n<li>modal share growth since 2006 (considered the year urban cycling started gaining momentum)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Minneapolis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Newcomer <a title=\"Minneapolis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.minneapolis.org\/visitor\/sports-parks-trails\/biking-trails?gclid=CL3NraPh-MUCFVMatAod4ysANQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minneapolis<\/a> is the only US city on the 2015 Copenhagenize Index, and a welcome surprise, after the US\u2019 notable absence from the previous<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/06\/Minneapolis-Skyline-Aerial-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Minneapolis Skyline Aerial\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/> index, released in 2013. Minneapolis boasts <a title=\"Minneapolis bike lanes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.minneapolis.org\/visitor\/sports-parks-trails\/biking-trails?gclid=CL3NraPh-MUCFVMatAod4ysANQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 miles<\/a> of recreational bike lanes winding through the city, of which 92 miles are off-street bike paths. Minneapolis also has the <a title=\"Minneapolis bike commuters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelchannel.com\/interests\/outdoors-and-adventure\/articles\/top-10-cycling-cities-in-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second-highest<\/a> number of bicycle commuters of the larger US cities, surpassed only by Portland. The city is so bike-friendly that the league of American Bicyclists <a title=\"Bicycle Friendly Community\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us\/bicycles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rewarded Minneapolis<\/a> with the Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community Award. Minneapolis even bikes <a title=\"Minneapolis winter cycling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NiceRideMN\/videos\/vb.264006970569\/496795208640\/?type=2&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the winter!<\/a> If you\u2019re only visiting the larger Twin City or don\u2019t want to shell out on a bike yet, affordable rented bikes are available through the city\u2019s affordable <a title=\"Nice Ride bike sharing network\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.niceridemn.org\/map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nice Ride<\/a> bike sharing network. A 30-day pass will only set you back $15, while a one-<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yardi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/06\/LPM-Apartments-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"LPM Apartments\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>year membership costs a meager $65 \u2013 that\u2019s just 30 cents a day.<\/p>\n<p>Want to live in the most bike-friendly city in the US? Check out <a title=\"LPM Apartments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments\/mn\/minneapolis\/lpm-apartments\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LPM Apartments (pictured at left)<\/a> in Central Minneapolis, a 354-unit LEED Silver-certified high rise in the Loring Park neighborhood. Owned by Magellan Development Group and managed by Magellan Property Management, LPM came online in 2014 offering downtown Minneapolis views. The 31-story apartment community boasts 40,000 square feet of amenities that include a bicycle shop and bike storage of course. Other swanky amenities include two pools, two spas, outdoor yoga area, guest suite, landscaped deck, and an indoor dog play room with lounge and dog wash area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montr\u00e9al<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s second largest city has been part of the Copenhagenize Top 20 bike-friendly cities since its first edition in 2015. Although it has since slipped from the eighth position to number 20, the city of a hundred steeples is holding on to its top 20 status. <a title=\"Montreal\" href=\"http:\/\/cdn.mtlblog.com\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/04\/Carte_cylable_Mtl_centre2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montr\u00e9al<\/a> boasts 383 miles of bikeways, while the <a title=\"Greater Montreal biking routes\" href=\"http:\/\/cdn.mtlblog.com\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/04\/Carte_cyclableMtl_metro2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greater Montr\u00e9al area<\/a> features a jaw-dropping 1,100 miles.
