Featuring guest speaker Jeanette Skipsey, market development manager for Mind BLMK, the event delved into the subject of mental health. With over 15 years of experience working with Mind BLMK, Skipsey is passionate about developing and enhancing knowledge in the promotion of wellbeing. Conversations centred around the link between stress, anxiety and physical health. While highlighting strategies to effectively navigate and maintain mental well-being for a balanced life.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recognising-the-normality-of-anxiety-stress\">Recognising the Normality of Anxiety &amp; Stress<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a world where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/#:~:text=One%20in%20four%20adults%20and,care%20for%20people%20who%20do.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 in 4 adults and 1 in 10 children<\/a> suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder, the pressure of daily life can feel overwhelming. Skipsey started her discussion by emphasising the normality of suffering from mental health. She notes, \u201cIt\u2019s not weakness and there\u2019s no health without mental health.\u201d Stress and anxiety are a natural response \u201chardwired into our genetics,\u201d a mechanism that has evolved to help us navigate challenges. By acknowledging stress as a normal part of the human experience, we can destigmatise mental health conversations. Stating that a \u201cthird of all GP visits are stress-related,\u201d underscores the general nature of this issue and the need for open dialogue.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em>\u201cSensitivity is in our genes \u2013 it\u2019s predetermined by nature. When we feel anxious about things, our automatic nervous system works with our central nervous system. And that will go into what we call fight, flight or freeze. That\u2019s a heightened state of stress\u2026it\u2019s normal in all of us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore, Skipsey\u2019s call to shift language away from the term \u201cmental health problem\u201d to more relatable terms, such as \u201cstress\u201d and \u201cemotional well-being\u201d is a practical step in encouraging discussions. This linguistic shift makes it easier for individuals to communicate their experiences, reducing the barriers\/stigma surrounding seeking help and support.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Links Between Physical &amp; Mental Health<\/h2>\n<p>The intricate link between physical and mental health is a crucial concept that Skipsey highlighted. Recognising that \u201cthe mind and physical self are not separate, but rather work in synergy,\u201d will allow individuals to adopt a holistic approach to their health and mental well-being. She notes that a minor physical ailment, \u201clike a common cold,\u201d can have cascading effects on mental processes, \u201cimpacting the mind and our capacity to think and make decisions,\u201d but also influencing our mood. Skipsey stresses that these mental challenges can manifest into physical symptoms. \u201cYou will be more tired, or you will neglect sleep\/nutrients\u201d because of the constant, emotional worrying. Thus, \u201caltering routines and daily habits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, understanding this connection between physical and mental health will empower individuals to manage both aspects of their health proactively. By doing so, we can better navigate the obstacles life throws at us.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em>\u201cAs a therapist, we train our mind to stop and think and listen before it gets to the physical. But for most of us, because we don\u2019t have that skill set, we only feel unwell\u2026because we\u2019re not engaging with our thoughts and feelings. So, it\u2019s good every day to engage with how you feel and justify how you feel. Really start to reflect and listen to your inner voice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RISE: A Blueprint for Well-being<\/h2>\n<p>Skipsey goes on to demonstrate how the Yardi RISE approach can be a practical framework for supporting well-being. She pinpoints how it provides actionable steps to manage mental health effectively. By grasping the four pillars of RISE (Recognise, Inspire, Showcase and Empower), men and women can build resilience and achieve a balanced state of mind.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Recognise:<\/strong> The first step involves acknowledging our \u201cinner voices\u201d and understanding that \u201canxiety is a normal part\u201d of the human experience. It is essential for effective self-care to recognise when \u201cstress becomes problematic\u201d and \u201cseeking professional help\u201d when needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inspire:<\/strong> Sharing knowledge about mental health inspires a culture of \u201copenness and understanding.\u201d Helping to break the silence surrounding mental health challenges and creating a \u201csupportive environment\u201d where individuals feel comfortable\/inspired to seek help.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Showcase:<\/strong> The importance of showcasing well-being cannot be overstated. \u201cSharing our journey\u201d and celebrating well-being achievements, no matter how small, contributes to changing the narrative around mental health. By \u201cshowcasing positive stories, we reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses\u201d and promote a culture of acceptance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empower:<\/strong> The core of Yardi RISE is empowerment. Taking \u201ctime for self-care, engaging in relaxation techniques and initiating conversations about mental health\u201d contributes to personal and community empowerment. Empowerment is about fostering a culture where seeking help is a \u201csign of strength, not weakness.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Journaling: A Tool for a Healthier Lifestyle<\/h2>\n<p>Skipsey ends her discussion by highlighting the important role tools such as \u201cmood diary journals\u201d have in supporting mental well-being. These journals provide a practical way for individuals to reflect on \u201ctheir emotions, identify patterns and gain insights\u201d into their mental state. Taking a few moments each day to assess and validate feelings, empowers individuals to make informed choices for their well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Mood diary journals serve as a valuable tool in promoting self-awareness and understanding. By incorporating journaling into daily routines, individuals can actively engage in their mental health journey and build a sense of control over their emotions.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the benefits of Journaling?<\/h3>\n<p>During the second half of the event, Yardi Account Executive and a member of the RISE committee, Harriet Clark, engaged the group in a journaling activity \u2013 where we shared our feelings of the day. But before we set out to complete this task, Clark shared her insights on journaling and how this practise has been instrumental for her in cultivating a well-balanced mental state.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key takeaways include:<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>\u201cJournaling is whatever you want it to be.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a way to process your feelings, process your emotions, keep track of how you were feeling during a certain period.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJournaling is a beautiful way to balance pros and cons, good and negative things in one\u2019s day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLife lessons and emotional challenges are endless \u2013 so, it can make it a bit more digestible for the mind, especially if you\u2019ve experienced some event.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJournaling can be a nice way to reflect on your emotional journey and feel proud of yourself on how far you have come.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Mind BLMK<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mind BLMK works across communities to support positive mental health and wellbeing.
