The latest virtual event, focusing on \u201c<em>Burnout<\/em>,\u201d welcomed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nikki-couper-stevens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nikki Couper<\/a>, PSG manager for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardi.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yardi<\/a>, as the keynote speaker. During the engaging session, Couper guided attendees through an exploration of burnout, its definition, early signs and how to manage it effectively. The session incorporated interactive elements and personal reflections, with participants offering insightful contributions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Burnout obviously can affect anyone, it doesn\u2019t matter what gender you are, but there is a gender lens around burnout and being a woman<\/em>. \u00a0<br \/><strong>\u2013 Nikki Couper, PSG manager for Yardi<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-burnout-nbsp\"><strong>What is Burnout?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Couper began the session by examining the varied definitions of burnout. Emphasising that while interpretations may differ, common threads are \u201cemotional, physical and mental exhaustion.\u201d Often triggered by stress or other prolonged pressures. An important theme Couper highlighted was a \u201cdisconnection from self.\u201d A phenomenon where individuals, particularly women, may feel detached from their own lives, questioning how they arrived at their current state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Couper discussed how societal expectations and gender roles continue to shape women\u2019s experiences of burnout. Despite strides towards gender equality, many women still carry \u201cinvisible labour\u201d at home in addition to professional responsibilities. This \u201csecond shift\u201d (balancing careers with caregiving and household management) places an additional, often unrecognised, burden. The discussion around emotional load was particularly resonant. Couper illustrated how tasks usually considered \u201csimple\u201d carry complex planning and emotional responsibilities that disproportionately fall on women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her insights invited attendees to consider the broader societal and personal dynamics that make women especially vulnerable to burnout. And to recognise that these pressures, while invisible, are no less real or exhausting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-impact-of-burnout\"><strong>The Impact of Burnout<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A significant and dynamic aspect of the session was the inclusion of a live anonymous poll. This brought immediate audience participation into the spotlight. Couper asked the virtual audience to reflect on their experiences with burnout, impostor syndrome and perceptions of gender expectations in career progression.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The results revealed that <strong>96%<\/strong> of attendees acknowledged having felt burnt out. A powerful statistic that underscored the session\u2019s relevance. Additionally, <strong>72%<\/strong> admitted to trying to avoid conflict or appearing \u201cdifficult\u201d at work and <strong>32%<\/strong> felt they needed to \u201cact more like a man\u201d to succeed professionally. These results sparked thoughtful discussions amongst the group and posed an intriguing question, \u201c<em>How might these results have differed if the poll had been conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic?<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The attendees observed that the pandemic and subsequent global events, such as economic instability, political tensions contributing to ongoing uncertainty, \u201cdecision-making fatigue\u201d and a constant low-grade stress exacerbates burnout. These remarks illuminated a critical point \u2014 today, burnout is not merely about workload, but about the \u201cemotional and cognitive toll\u201d of living in an unpredictable world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The polling exercise not only validated shared experiences but also fostered a sense of community and reflection among attendees, encouraging deeper engagement with the topic.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recognising-that-you-are-burning-out\"><strong>Recognising that you are Burning Out<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Couper then guided participants through the main categories of burnout symptoms, divided into four key areas:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Emotional signs <\/strong>include irritability, anxiety and feelings of disconnection from life or work.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Physical symptoms<\/strong> manifest as fatigue, sleep disturbances and even panic attacks.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Behavioural indicators<\/strong> range from procrastination and an inability to complete tasks to the opposite extreme \u2014 overworking in an attempt to maintain control.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Language and inner dialogue<\/strong> were also examined, particularly the dangerous use of \u201cshould\u201d statements, such as \u201cI should be able to cope.\u201d Couper challenged attendees to critically explore this self-talk and question who imposes these unrealistic standards.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By categorising symptoms so clearly, Couper provided a practical framework that attendees could apply to self-assess and identify early warning signs before burnout becomes overwhelming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-takeaways-practical-strategies-for-managing-burnout\"><strong>Key Takeaways: Practical Strategies for Managing Burnout<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The session concluded with Couper sharing several actionable strategies to help manage and mitigate burnout:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Contextualise Your Work:<\/strong> Couper reminded everyone that while professional excellence is important, it is essential to maintain perspective \u2014 work is just one part of life, not the entirety of it.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>It is just a job at the end of the day and we all like to think we\u2019re indispensable but we\u2019re not, as hard as that is to hear. Of course we want to do a good job and of course, we want to do our best, I think just trying to make sure we\u2019re putting it in context is important.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Own Your Choices:<\/strong> Life inevitably involves hard choices. Couper urged attendees to consciously choose their \u201chard\u201d \u2014 acknowledging that while every path has its challenges, actively deciding empowers individuals to shape their lives intentionally.\u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The choices are hard, and it\u2019s about deciding what your choice is going to be. There are two sides to every situation and every coin. We can make a decision and we can decide how we want our lives to progress.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Journaling and Talking:<\/strong> Reflective practices, such as journaling or even casual conversations with strangers, can offer profound emotional relief and connection.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Just jotting things down, maybe a notebook or talking to someone builds a connection point, which can help you reflect and identify that you are not okay.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prioritise Movement<\/strong>: Couper emphasised the importance of physical activity, however small. Regular movement, even a short walk, can significantly boost mental health and physical well-being.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Movement will help with your well-being. It will help with the circulation of your blood, which in turn will help the blood flow to your brain and release endorphins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Couper also highlighted that maintaining consistent, small habits (rather than expecting large, unsustainable changes) was key to long-term resilience.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shifting-the-narrative-around-burnout-nbsp\"><strong>Shifting the Narrative Around Burnout<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The topic around \u201c<em>Burnout<\/em>\u201d for this RISE session served as a powerful reminder that burnout is a multifaceted issue deeply intertwined with societal expectations, personal self-worth and external pressures. Couper\u2019s thoughtful exploration of the subject, combined with candid participant engagement, created an atmosphere of learning and mutual support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As we navigate the ever-changing demands of professional and personal life, recognising burnout early and responding compassionately, both to ourselves and others, is vital. Perhaps the most profound takeaway is this \u2014 We do not have to measure our worth by our ability to endure exhaustion. Instead, we can choose a new narrative.
