Dylan before the scissors

Dylan Cline hates being the center of attention, but when it came to cutting off the long hair he’d spent over a decade growing all the way down his back, he made an exception.

The customer care representative for Point2 Homes, a subsidiary of Yardi Systems based in Saskatchewan, Canada, decided to drastically change his look, extreme makeover style, for the benefit of kids with cancer.

The Big Haircut ceremony featured all of the Point2 team joining Dylan and a barber down in the basement for snacks and encouragement. Picture yourself getting haircut while all your coworkers stand around, snack on cheese and sparkling juice, and watch.

“That was incredibly different for me,” Dylan admitted. “I didn’t like being the main focus.”

And despite all the compliments he’s gotten on his new look, it also took him awhile to realize that his lengthy locks were no longer attached to his scalp.

“For the first couple days I kept reaching back to take out of the ponytail and realized that it wasn’t there anymore,” he said.

Jacquelyn Bauer, Director of Point 2 Customer Care, gave us her version of the pony tale.

“Ever since Dylan started working at Point2, his hair has been halfway down his back.  We always teased him and asked when he would be cutting his hair, to which we received non-committal responses.

“After a recent return from maternity leave, I was catching up with former team members.  Dylan was sitting in my office one day chatting, and the topic turned to his hair.  I asked him if thought he would ever cut it, to which he replied, ‘You know, I’ve actually been thinking I’m ready to.’

I can’t take the credit for coming up with the idea as we had a similar fundraiser a number of years ago, and it was a huge success.  I asked Dylan if he would be game to do something similar, and he was all for it.  He said he would love to raise money for a charity involving children, and the rest is history!”

Dylan’s hair will go to Locks of Love and the money raised from the Chop 4 Charity fundraiser benefits the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. Point2 employees contributed to the fund, and Yardi Systems matched the donations.

“I have old family friends where their kids have spent time in Ronald McDonald House. Were it not for places like that, their kids may not be here today. So it was partially my own history and who better to give it than a kid,” Dylan said of his motivations for making the big change.

When it comes to his work in customer service, Dylan also enjoys helping others. He’s known for his ability to handle multiple Point2 clients simultaneously with issues involving tech support and product set-up and functionality.

“It’s nice to have people ask you how to solve things. Being a problem solver is fun,” he said.

In his free time, Dylan enjoys video games, website design, spending time with friends and family, cycling around Saskatoon, and going to the movies.

Learn more about Dylan:

What is your favorite type of music?

I don’t really have a constant favorite. A few years ago, it used to be Heavy Metal (Even helped set up a Metallica concert!), but lately I’ve been listening to much more Dubstep (Skrillex, Deadmau5, the UFK Dub people, etc). I also will listen to older rock, and folk music though. So, really… I’ll listen to anything from Bob Dylan, to Valdy, to Skrillex.

What is your favorite book of all time and (optional: why)?

My favorite *series* of all time is probably Lord of the Rings, since it’s one of the first book series I ever read, and really cemented my love of all things geeky (dragons, knights, etc).

If you have an hour of free time to spare, what do you do with it?

It really depends on my mood. If I’m feeling overly creative, I’ll write or play at designing various aspects of a website I’m (very slowly) putting together. If I’m not feeling so creative, I’d probably spend it playing random videogames, or browsing Reddit. Specifically the “Today I Learned” subreddit. Some amazing information there!

What kinds of food do you like?

Pretty much anything, honestly. There’s a very small list of food that I don’t like. I would have to say my favorite food of all time though, is veal cordon blue.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve ever traveled?

I really haven’t traveled much, and I’ve never actually been outside of Canada. British Columbia is my favorite province that I have traveled to so far, simply for its beauty. Eventually, I would love to go to New Zealand.

What do you like best about your job?

Getting an angry customer at the start of a call, and then having them end up happy by the end of the same call. Always a good day when I can reverse someone’s bad mood.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or historical, who would it be?

I would have to say Nathan Fillion; I was a huge fan of the Firefly tv show, and from various interviews and such, he seems like a guy who’d be a ton of fun to spend time with.

What are the words you live by?

That’s a hard question to answer, as it’s changed a few times. Ghandi’s quote of “Be the change you want to see in the world” is always a good one, and has stuck with me for quite some time as well.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

This quote is the best answer to this question I have ever heard:

When I was 5 years old, my mom told me that happiness was the key to life.
When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I
wrote down “happy”. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment. I told
them they didn’t understand life.” – John Lennon

If you could own one piece of famous art, sculpture, memorabilia or historic artifact, what would the item be?

I actually have no desire to own any piece of famous art, mostly because anything I would want to have would be one of a kind, and those types of pieces should be enjoyed by everyone.

What are some things on your bucket list?

Most of them include travel, or doing something crazy. There are some places where they have “Airsoft” war games – it’s like paintball, but with tiny plastic pellets instead of paintballs. That would be a ton of fun.

What was your last Do It Yourself project?

I’m in the middle of creating a website, and a month or so ago I built my first computer. I also like carpentry, but since I no longer live on a farm, I no longer have access to a woodshop.

What athlete or sports figure do you most admire?

Dean Karnazes; He is an American long distance runner. The guy is basically super-human. If you haven’t heard of him, he’s #5 in this list: Real People With Mind Blowing Superpowers

What online sites do you visit?

Reddit, and many of its boards. The Web Design, Today I Learned, and Ask Me Anything sections are probably my favorite. Outside of Reddit, I spend a lot of time on ThinkGeek.com, and also use the “StumbleUpon” browser addon which sends me to random cool webpages throughout the internet. (I warn you, StumbleUpon is addictive, once you’ve properly set up your interests).

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Perfect memory, with instant recall. Being able to instantly remember anything I ever read, watched, or heard… would really come in handy.

What’s something about you that few people know?

I secretly spend time browsing the “Aww” board of Reddit  which is chalk-full of cute stuff. Cute animals, babies, heartwarming stories… All that jazz.
